The biggest sailing event got on its way today in Kärdla |
Almost 750 sailors on 130 yachts will set sail on Sunday. The seven days of races will take them to Kärdla, Haapsalu, Kuivastu, Roomassaare and Pärnu. The week full of races will also determine the Estonian Offshore champions in classes CDL £ 8 and Folkboot.
This is the oldest regatta in Estonia, taking place for the 62nd time already. The teams are from four different countries – Finland, Latvia, Russia and Estonia. The winners will be awarded on July 20 in Pärnu Yacht Club.
Summery start in Kärdla
The long day of preparations was concluded by Hiiu county governor Reili Rand, who expressed hope the regatta would start in Hiiumaa also in the future and bring more young people to sailing.

President Kersti Kaljulaid in Roomassaare at the launch of the Bellingshausen expedition
July 17 will be
especially festive. The President of the Republic of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid
and the squadron of Moonsund
regatta boats will send the S/Y Admiral Bellingshausen to her expedition to
Antarctica.
The manager of the Antarctica expedition, Tiit
Pruuli: “This voyage is to celebrate the discovery of the
icy continent in January 1820 by Admiral Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen,
who was born Saaremaa. The yacht is sailing under the flag of Saaremaa Merispordiselts (Saaremaa Maritime Sports Society) and serves several purposes: to tell
the story of Bellingshausen’s the historic voyage, to introduce Estonia, to
promote sailing and maritime affairs and to talk about the health of the oceans and global warming”.
After waving them off the first race around the island of Abruka will commence.
