Sunny weather and fair winds brought the fleet from Kärdla to Haapsalu |
It was the first race of the Moonsund regatta – the biggest yachting event in Estonia – and it took the 131 boats to Haapsalu. It’s the 62 year of this highly expected summer event.
According to PRO Andres Talts, the PRO MARINE TRADE Kärdla - Haapsalu leg enjoyed near perfect conditions. Maybe it was a tiny bit too chilly, but otherwise excellent.
The boats were divided into eight groups and the planned distance was 30 miles. The race was blessed with 8-knot North winds. During the race some bigger yachts were somewhat worried as the wind was getting weaker but towards the finish line it came back with a 10-20 knot force. The fastest boats today were of the Open 800 class from Russia.
The winner of ORC I, the group of the biggest yachts, was Olympic from Dago Yacht Club. They were clearly happy as the regatta set off from their home harbour. Helmsman Tiit Vihul: “We are truly delighted. We made no mistakes, and everything worked well. It was quite exciting to be on the starting line together with ORC II – this meant there were 22 yachts, giving us an excellent opportunity to practice for the upcoming ORC European Championships in Sweden.”
Ain Pomerants of Merion X, Kalev Yacht Club, was pleasantly surprised to be the fastest in ESTLYS I. “Today’s weather was just amazing and the conditions ideal for sailing. I don’t even remember the last time we won a race in Moonsund as we skipped the last season. We are sincerely over the moon!”
Among the ten Folkboots Tiit Riisalo’s Lind from Kalev Yacht Club came in first.
