Press release The biggest regatta in Estonia starts on Saturday in Pärnu | 09 Jul 20, sigrid.kahar

We are pleased to confirm the A. Le Coq 63rd Moonsund Regatta will celebrate its official opening on Saturday the 11th of July at Pärnu Yacht Club. During the week of races more than 100 teams from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland will race from Pärnu to Tallinn, popping in on the Hiiumaa island en route. We are thrilled to announce that also the current President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid will join us for one race on Tuesday.

Regatta director Agnes Lill is pleased with the number of participants: “Due to the lockdown and recent crisis we were not sure if the regatta will happen at all until the very end of May. Fortunately, the situation improved and it’s evident that the Moonsund Regatta is an important part of summer for any ORC sailor in Estonia”.

President Kersti Kaljulaid will participate in the Pärnu – Kärdla leg on Tuesday the 14th of July. She will join Piloilleri 3, an all-female team captained by Anne-Mari Luik. This would the third time for her already to race in the regatta. The President will address the captains during the morning briefing before setting off towards Kärdla.

Estonian ORC sailors have improved steadily and can boast with many international achievements. The attending teams are willing to enjoy an exciting week of challenges, in which last years’ winners will pace themselves against several World and European Cup medallists. Due to the Covid-19 situation all ORC championships have been cancelled both in Europe and elsewhere and this time all teams can race at home.

The regatta will use the ORC (Offshore Rating Congress) measuring system, which is the system of choice of the Estonian Yachting Union since last autumn. The boats will race in four groups based on their length and speed and the group parameters will be published on Saturday.

For Folkboots Moonsund is a championship regatta but the ORC Estonian champions will be established during the Baltic Offshore Week in August.

More than 100 boats and 700 sailors from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland will race. Unfortunately, we are not able to host our dear friends and long-time participants from Russia as due to the corona situation nearly twenty yachts are not able to attend. The list of participating teams can be found here: http://muhuvain.ee/regatt2020/osavotjad
