Saturday, 17 July, the third stage of the Offshore Sailing Estonian Cup came to its finish. The  53rd Muhu Väina Regatta with nearly 600 participants on 89 yachts, which is also the record since regaining of independence, from five countries covered a distance  of 200 nautical miles on the route Pärnu-Roomassaare-Virtsu-Dirhami in six days. The Muhu Väina Regatta was also a competition to find out Estonian champions in offshore racing and in class X-41. The keywords of the Regatta were an excellently warm summer weather and lack of wind.

The most popular offshore regatta in Estonia took off on Monday, 12 July at 14 from Pärnu to cover the 8-nautical mile Pärnu round. Thereafter, on Tuesday the Regatta took the competitors to the longest race of 75 nautical miles to Roomassaare, which turned out to be rather time-consuming due to the lack of wind. Due to the same reasons, the inshore course of only 4.4 miles took place in Roomassaare on Wednesday. On Thursday, the participants raced from Roomassaare to Virtsu on a 40-50-mile trip and from there on to Dirhami through a 45-55 mile voyage to Dirhami on Friday. The last leg of the Regatta on Saturday took place, again, on a 4.4-mile inshore course in Dirhami. On Saturday afternoon the award and closing ceremony of the Regatta took also place at Port Dirhami. There were yachtsmen from five countries at the Muhu Väina Regatta – from Estonia, Russia, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania.

During the 53rd Muhu Väina Regatta Estonian Championships in Class X-41 were held. The first place was won with the set of 1-1-3-1-2-3 by yacht Forte EST475 with the team of Jaak Jõgi from ESS Kalev Yacht Club. The second place was won with the set of 2-2-2-2-1-2 by yacht Technonicol EST615 by the steering of Mati Sepp, also from ESS Kalev Yacht Club. Third was with 14 points yacht Premium of ESS Kalev Yacht Club by the steering of Priit Tammemägi.

The competition of the Muhu Väina Regatta took place in four groups according to the GPH (general purpose handicap). The GPH shows the estimated speed of the yacht as second/mile or in how many seconds should the yacht travel one mile. The coefficient of each yacht is calculated by a special computer programme, taking into account the size of the tackle, sail dimensions, shape of the hull, weight of the crew and other parameters. The general ranking is obtained by multiplying the finishing time by the GPH of the yacht. Group I consists of yachts, the GPH of which is less than 615.0, the competitors of Group II have a GPH in the range of  615.1 – 640.0, the GPH for Group III is 640.1-700.0 and the GPH of the fourth group is higher than 700.1. In addition to that, there are 2 LYS class groups.

The points calculation for the ORC groups was carried out by the method of Performance Line Offshore/Inshore (the adjusted time is obtained by subtracting from the product of the time of the trip and offshore time coefficient of the yacht the product of the length of the distance and offshore coefficient of the distance), which has not often been in use in Estonia before and which provided surprising moments for the competitors.

For the first time, it was possible to observe the movement of the yachts in real time via a GPS system from the homepage of the Regatta at www.muhuvain.ee , which turned out to be very popular and gave a different dimension to the Regatta.

The Muhu Strait Regatta was organised by ESS Kalev Yacht Club in co-operation with Pärnu Yacht Club and Estonian Yachting Union. The major sponsors of the Muhu Väina Regatta were the Honda Motor Europe Ltd Estonian Branch and the Port of Tallinn and the supporters Salvest, AutoEkspert, NorthSails, Saarte Liinid, Liviko, Dermoshop, Firmakink, LoodusInvest and Delfi.
