Activities of the Voyage Group at the A. Le Coq 69th Moonsund Regatta

While the competitors were testing their skills against each other at sea, the members of the Moonsund Regatta Voyage Group had the opportunity to explore the islands that hosted the event.

Hiiumaa

On Hiiumaa, the group was guided by Jaano Martin Ots, a local maritime expert with extensive knowledge of the surrounding waters who also works as a sea rescuer. Under his inspiring guidance, the group visited the Hill of Crosses (Ristimägi), created in memory of the coastal Swedes who were deported from Hiiumaa in 1781, and climbed to the top of the unique Tahkuna metal lighthouse.

The group admired the transformation of the Viskoosa Cultural Factory from a crumbling industrial giant into a driving force of regional culture and visited the newly opened major exhibition of contemporary Baltic art. After a day filled with culture and new knowledge, emotions were allowed to flow freely while hugging the sheep at Veskimäe and tasting a variety of beers at the Hiiumaa Brewery.

Muhumaa

After a lively crossing to Kuivastu, the Voyage Group was taken under the wing of Muhu cultural organiser Eveli Jürisson, who introduced the places on the island that are closest to her own heart. The programme included a visit to Koguva village with its ancient farmhouses, followed by enjoying Muhu ice cream while admiring the view from Üügu Cliff and tasting wines from the Muhu Wine Farm.

The day ended with a visit to Muhu Lõunaranna marina and a cheerful lunch at Kala Café.

Saaremaa

In the tropical surroundings of Kõiguste marina, the sailors had the chance to reflect on their roots at Asva Viking Village. Located close to the Viking village, Asva hillfort is one of Northern Europe’s most significant Bronze Age research sites and Estonia’s richest archaeological site in terms of finds. The sailors had the opportunity to bake traditional ancient birka bread and try Viking weapons and armour.

For the Voyage Group, the regatta week ended with the now traditional visit to the Pöide Brewery.
